For Chawla, grabbing wickets is the way to go

NEW DELHI: Contrary to popular belief that spinners can only play a containing role in limited-overs cricket, Team Punjab leggie Piyush Chawla believes getting wickets is the only way to go, especially in the T20 format.

"The batsmen don't have much time in T20 and if you try to stop the free flow of runs, you will be hammered all over the park. So, I always look to take wickets whenever the captain asks me to bowl," Chawla, who is the leading wicket-taker among Indian spinners in the IPL, told TOI on Monday.

Chawla, who was part of the team during India's victory in the inaugural World T20 in South Africa in 2007 and also in the thick of things during the 2011 World Cup campaign, is out of favour these days. He is hoping selectors will notice him through the IPL.

"I have some responsibilities with the Punjab team and I hope to prove my worth. The encouraging bit is that the ball is coming nicely out of my hand these days and that makes me feel really good," Chawla said.

Three weeks into IPL 5, spinners are playing a key role in the tournament, with some captains even starting off with slower bowlers. "Spinners take the pace off the ball and that makes stroke making difficult. The openers are generally used to fast bowlers and so spinners act as good change of pace," he added.

Chawla sounded excited with the way his team defeated Mumbai on Sunday evening and he hopes his skipper Adam Gilchrist comes back into action at the earliest. "It was a good match for us and the league is open for all teams. This is one format which has no favourites," Chawla added.
